Supporting an ESCON (Enterprise System Connection) product further rounds out Solimar's wide assortment of connectivity, printer emulation, and queue management options. The ESCON input emulates 3490e and 3480 tape control units. The product provides IBM and plug compatible mainframes with a fast fiber-optic connection for submitting data to the Solimar® Print/Director to further process and distribute. Compared to BUS/TAG, ESCON eliminates cable bulk, provides improved data security, greatly extends channel cabling distances and significantly increases data transfer rates. Submitting print volume via ESCON eliminates network traffic associated with sending jobs via TCP/IP from the host.
Combine the ESCON input product with Print/Director's conversion and output modules and data transferred via ESCON can be directed to virtually any type of printer or device. The Print/Director can serve as a gateway to route data received over ESCON to BUS/TAG, TCP/IP, parallel, Novell, and Xerox SCSI compatible printers, spool to disk, or FTP to remote servers. Include Print/Director's printer emulation modules and the ESCON data can be converted for printing to Metacode, IPDS, line, PCL and PostScript printers. In addition to printing, the data can be converted to TIFF or PDF for archiving.
